What's Up with The Comprehensive Dental Reform Act of 2012

Dentistry is an area of health that is often neglected on a worldwide scale. Statistically, fewer people have dental insurance than they do health insurance. However, the United States is beginning to make headway in changing this with a new dental reform act.

The American Dental Association describes the overview of the reform act as:

“This bill covers five main components aimed at ending the oral health crisis in America by expanding coverage, creating new access points, enhancing the workforce, improving education, and funding new research” (Click here to view source)

With this act, many supporting organizations hope to address more comprehensively and diminish completely the dental crisis, which has been labeled the “silent epidemic” by the U.S. surgeon general.

However, there is tension in coming to an agreement. The ADA, in addition to other organizations, does not support all provisions within the Reform Act but are willing to work to “mak[e] improvements”

The importance of dental care is indisputable as it helps protect against gum disease, infection of the mouth and roots, and much more. The Reform Act states that “Untreated oral health problems contribute to an increased risk for serious medical conditions such as diabetes, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and poor birth outcomes.” (Click here to view source)

While not yet perfected, the concept of the Comprehensive Dental Reform Act of 2012 is a step in the right direction and a statement to the American people that oral health is just as important to maintain as any other aspect of healthy living.

Dr. Alexander Ash and his staff at his Studio City, CA dental office stress the importance of oral hygiene and encourage people to see a dental hygienist for teeth cleanings regularly. Routine maintenance helps to prevent oral health problems that may occur—many of which are irreversible.
